media revolution bbc 2

The daily newspapers have lost 2.25 million readers over the past 10 years. The mirror has lost 750,000 readers, however the sun has lost only 400,000, whilst the sunday papers have lost around 500,000 readers. Advertising has had a great effect on the sale of newspapers as sales have declined by a total of 20%. The percentage of revenue comes from advertising for local papers is 75%. Rupert Murdoch revolutionized newspaper production in the mid 80's by moving the newspapers from fleet street to whopping and introducing a computing system. The sun is the only newspaper not to have lost readers over the last year due to the fact they increased there circulation by cutting its cover price. Other newspapers to try and counteract the loss in revenue from advertising such as increasing cover price and offering freebies. Mcfly brought the newspaper and the music industry together by giving their album away for free in newspapers.
'Free Newspapers' such as the metro has been accused of dumbing down the news as only 55% of it is actual news, people however are not willing to pay for it. The web has had a impact on newspaper readers especially the younger audience, as the younger generation want to hear about news immediately, and the web can offer this too people meaning they don't have to wait to receive there paper or watch the news on the television. The telegraph gas embraced the digital word as it has created a new work space a digital company in which the pages created by the journalist are projected onto the walls so the workers can see how many views there work is getting. Creating a competition within the workplace. The effect online access and globalization has had on the industry and reader ship is that 1\3 of readers are british,1\3 is american and the other 1\3 is readers from around the world. However adverts should apply to people in their own country not adverts for english products, for example a australian viewing the page should have adverts which apply to them such as advertisements for surfboards.
